Wisdom and Gain

Wisdom and Gain picture

Is it not gain to sacrifice
When giving to the Lord?
Since he has paid the ransom price,
Can we not love afford?
Is it not wise to lay aside
The things that pass away
And in the light of love abide,
For this alone will stay?
Is it not loss to grasp and cling
For what can never fill,
And follow after hopes that bring
Destruction to the will?
Is it not foolishness to prize
What only will decay,
And feed the fault before our eyes
Which on our souls does prey?

Theology

I really like theology. Throughout my relationship with the Lord, I’ve often found myself more at home in the academic realm than anywhere else. Thick books with big words and complicated explanations concerning the nature of God have long captivated my interest and stirred my heart for the Lord. I get excited when I get a better grasp of a doctrine, and I am thrilled when I get to share with others about possible ways of understanding the God of our salvation and his ways in the world. I desire to know him and to make him known, as the saying goes. But to grow in an understanding of God is to recognize that God will never be fully understood through my studies in this life. For Whose Name’s Sake?

I have a bad habit of wanting to be profound. Whether I’m writing or speaking, I have a desire to say something memorable, something life changing, something people will quote after reading. I know I shouldn’t pursue such things. I know that the movement of God won’t be hindered by my inability to alliterate every point in a lesson. I know all that really matters is whether or not I’m obedient to the Lord. So why does this matter to me so much?

Discontentment

“The grass is always greener…”
So they say
So it seems
“If I could only get there…”
Wand’ring mind
Wishful dreams
“My troubles would be over…”
Hopeful claim
Happy lie
“My life would be far better…”
Boastful joke
Bitter sigh
“If God would only bless me…”
Foolish talk
Fallen heart
“I’d give him all the glory…”
Downward gaze
Devil’s dart
“So clearly can my eyes see…”
Captive soul
Cursing breath
“No chance of idolatry…”
Grasp for prize
Grip your death
